My wife and I will be going to San Francisco on vacation this year. I lived there in 1978 and ran away from home at the age of 14. Have not been back since.. Parents moved back to Georgia a year after I left. So I had no real reason to return.
We lived in a middle class neighborhood in South San Francisco. I attended Alta Loma Jr. High. (Think they changed the name). Best friend's name was Raul Garcia.
Remember going to Tanforan Mall a lot (food courts were a new thing back then).. The Exploratorium was pretty new too.. Loved going to Chinatown and Japan Center aka Japan Town..
This time we will be staying in style.. The Four Seasons Hotel downtown.. I remember the last time I was in the SFO area I had 53 cents to my name and a paper bag with four shirts and a pair of pants..glad things change from time to time..
Hope that I can find my friend Raul.. He may not want to find me though.. never kept in contact.. But I have often thought of him over the last 25 or so years.
I remember Ted Nugent was playing at the Cow Palace the year I left.. and the Eagles band was still a big deal..
Also remember the total nightmare I was living through with depression and there not being such a thing as rehabilitation for persons with emotional trauma back then..
