Pear Pie Recipes
As child growing up in East Texas I was privy to meeting one of the greatest woman that ever lived in probably the history of Texas ( East Texas specifically ).
Her name was Mama Pearl. - Her real name was Pearl Conner and she was my Great Grand Mother. She wore clothes that she made from simple floral patterns and matching sunbonnets made while making her dresses.
She always had a timeless stare on her face with the look of having faced life head on without fear. She was a devout Christian woman that would walk to church when ever the doors were open. People in the community would often stop and offer her a ride which she gladly took in her later years. Still in her 80's she would walk to church. Her calling to serve was strong and humble.
Mama Pearl dipped snuff - I remember the cans of snuff were the size of a Folgers coffee cans. Don't know how long that amount would last her, but being frugle she would recycle the cans by using them for spit cans in strategic locations aroud the house.
Sorry for the long introduction: On to the White Apple Pie.
I derived this dessert title around the time I was in kindergarten. It looked like Apple Pie but the fruit was white. Being the simple child that I was. That was the title that I affixed to her wonderful pear pie recipe. She even cooled them on the windowsill just like you see in the movies when someone steals a pie.
At the most I probably had this pie 3 or 4 times as a kid, and I remember every bite of that delectable slice of heaven that she made with out the use of measuring cups. She was old school and just grabbed handfuls of flower, sugar, and whatever else went into this creation of bliss.
Mentioning this little story to others throughout my life, they have tried to treat me by making a pear pie. Nothing to do this day tasted as good as hers. The recipe passed with her in the fall of 1976. Oh Mama Pearl we could have put Marie Calendars on their ear financially if we went public with your wonderful pie.
This recipe rests with in her in a Lufkin, Texas cemetery today. Sometimes, the memory of something is better than actually having it. In this case both would be great, but I will settle for the memories.
I found one recipe for Pear Pie with Cinnamon. It probably won't taste the same as Mama Pearl's pie but it will be good. Just use fresh pears and lots of sugar and butter!
